Western Suburbs 7s
In 1883, Rugby Sevens was born as a fundraiser for Scotland's Melrose RFC. The idea for the game came from Ned Haig and was enabled by his employer, David Anderson. This variant of rugby is played throughout the world by professionals and amateurs. While there are tournaments organized around the holidays, the bulk of Rugby Sevens is played in the summer, and our program is no exception.
Western Suburbs Sevens Program is player-directed. In 2018, Spencer Caldwell and "Sweet" Lou Huggins have taken responsibility for organizing the club's summer seven's practices, schedule, and game play. Sevens gives the team the opportunity to work on skills like communication, running from depth, passing, and running in support. In addition to developing players, those who step up learn to organize the club, develop leadership skills, and gain a healthy appreciation of the challenges of organizing a bunch of rugby players.
The Western Suburbs 7s season ends with our club's Boo Daddy's 7s Tournament on the first Saturday in August at Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia.
