2 July 2009
Practice. Tonight. 7 PM. Poplar Tree field #1.
1 July 2009
Earning their Stripes (USA Today article about the Eagles match coming up this weekend on ESPN.) Other than that, nothing is going on except Cape Fear 7's-Casey Mackintosh-message board (read the previous postings).
30 June 2009
Yes! Rugby practice tonight, 7 PM. But, hark! "A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible." The usual summer thing. So call or check the message board before venturing out, depending. Use your discretion, or whatever is left of it after the last few concussions.
29 June 2009
Nothing going on today save possibly hangovers from that drinkup in Leesburg.
The Cape Fear tournament is coming up this weekend. You last minuters can contact Casey Mackintosh on the message board if you want to go.
26 June 2009
Friday! A weekend looms, but... no rugby. Instead there's... drinking! Post up on the message board if you're going to the Leesburg Beerfest - or whatever they're calling it, the Loudoun County Drunkup, whatever.
Have a great weekend. And remember, if you want to go to the Cape Fear 7's tournament, tell Casey Mackintosh on the message board.
25 June 2009
Rugby tonight, same place, same time. As the chance of rain and thundershowers is only 30%, I'll spare you my usual text about checking the message board and the field closure line, etc.
Oh, wait, I just wrote it.
On the message board there's a question about attendance at something called the Leesburg Beerfest. (Call it a wine tasting, Octoberfest or Beerfest, the end result is the same.) Anyway, if you plan to go to this post up and let the other WSRFC guys know, so you can all get riotously sloshed together. Being a Mormon I don't know much about drinking, but I do know that heavy drinking alone is probably a bad idea...
24 June 2009
Nothing going on today save my lament for the passing of Ed McMahon, World War II and Korean War Marine aviator and purveyor of Heigh-ohhhh! I am too grief stricken to comment further.
23 June 2009
Tuesday means sevens practice tonight at the usual place, 7 PM. It's always a good plan to check to see if the field is open before venturing out (703-324-5264), or check the message board. We get a lot of water around here this time of the year...
And... the Casey Mackintosh Cape Fear thing... read yesterday's post about it.
22 June 2009
Just for kicks, the Summers Restaurant rugby page is here. I see they played the British Lions/Springboks match on Saturday. Results here.
From Casey Mackintosh: "We just entered a Suburbs side for the Cape Fear 7's tournament, held in Wilmington NC on July 4th and 5th. We're in the Social Division, same as last year. This is a great time. Lots of people, lots of shenanigans. Sean and I will be trying to drive down Thursday night in order to maximize our Social time. Elvis is getting a hotel room, and the twins are staying with a friend. If anyone is interested, contact Casey via the message board."

Nothing going on (rugbywise) this weekend, boo hoo. But have a great weekend anyway.
18 June 2009
I'll stop opening with "Brigham here."
Sevens practice tonight at the usual place, 7 PM. But! Looks like rain! Check to see if the field is open before venturing out (703-324-5264), or check the message board.
I removed mention of the NOVA 7's tournament from the schedule. From what I understand we don't have a side entered. The next proposed Sevens (fine game, that, O.D.) tournament is Cape Fear Sevens on the 4th and 5th of July. If you want to go contact Elvis, whom I think is the POC.
A word of advice from Coach Swart: "I would like more bodies to come out to touch and keep in shape for this coming season, D2 is going to be a steep climb."
Check out the culturally insensitive Fiat haka ad.
Elvis got an e-mail from former WSRFC player Brad Handley, who asked to have his name added to the players list. I have done this. Cool photo, Brad... you look like a hobo rugger. (Yes, I know of one.) Your new photo has more soul than your old one.
What is it about rugby? Even if you haven't played for years you still feel a connection.
17 June 2009
Brigham here. There's a tournament going on this coming weekend, NOVA Sevens in Manassas. If you want to go contact, well, Elvis, I guess. If he's not going he knows who is.
Speaking of E, I exchanged e-mails with him yesterday, to the effect of, "Okay, the website is virus-free and has been for weeks, and I can't find any bad links. The pages are up to date. I'm done. You can have it back now." Elvis cited a heavy workload (drinking all that beer is hard work enough for any one man) and asked if I wanted to stay on as the webmaster for a while. I agreed. So I'm the webmaster until... ? I don't know. When I get overwhelmed with other stuff or burned out, I guess.
I do know from experience that it's hard to maintain this site to some level of relevance without also being active in the club's affairs, at least a little. Virtuality can only go so far. So perhaps I may become a social member again. Or I may show up for a jog or two; I certainly can use it. This will give the newer members the opportunity to ask, "Who's that huge old guy?"
In an odd sort of synchronicity, last night I dreamed that I was playing a rugby match and scored try after try. Only in my dreams...
As the club's old-timers know all too well, I have a tendency to write and write and write. Run on at the keyboard, so to speak. A tiny portion of it actually has to do with rugby from time to time. If you have the yen and find the sorts of things interesting that I find interesting, my daily blog is here. Or not. Up to you. No pressure.
16 June 2009
Looks like O.D. wrote today's post on the message board: "WSRFC contiues to hold touch sessions at 7PM on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Poplar Tree Park Field #1, weather permitting. Bring your friends, your neighbors, and your friends' neighbors out to learn the game and get in a run. Check the web site for directions and the message board for potential weather contingencies. It's time to recruit some new talent, teach a little ball handling and position skills, play some bugger, and have some fun. The time you put in now will pay off coming into the club's fall return to Division 2, and the team will need every available body to make it a successful season. See you on the pitch, OD"
12 June 2009
Want to see what the Fall Division II matrix match schedule looks like? It's here.
11 June 2009
Brigham here. Practice tonight at 7 PM at Poplar Tree field #1. But wait! A quick check on weather.com reveals that the area is once again under a flash flood warning until late this evening. So here we go again. Check the Fairfax field hotline at 703-324-5264 or the ever-popular WSRFC Message Board for notice about field closures before venturing out.
I found some new Suburbs Internationale images while rummaging around on the website directories: Zip Adamovich and ? visit China. Were these ever posted? I don't know.
10 June 2009
Brigham here. I restored John "Iceman" Cooper's 9/11 Ground Zero photos. The link is here. This website used to get a ton of hits from that page; word got around shortly after 9/11.
Rugbyfootball.com still looks okay - no evidence of a virus. And all the links should work. Once again, if you run across a bad link, please tell me.
A statistic, so you're properly impressed: I have WSRFC images going back to 1986, with few until Fall, 1998. Lots after that. I have no less than 28,600 files in 595 folders - those are just rugby images. When I said it's a lot of work to restore the image files, I meant it!
By the way, I have the world's largest collection of images of Kevin Corry with a shirt pulled over his head. I asked, but the Guinness Book people don't care.
9 June 2009
Practice tonight, 7 PM, Poplar Tree field #1. But it has been raining, so be sure to check the Fairfax field hotline at 703-324-5264. From Bushy: "We have Poplar Tree #1 Tues and Thurs starting at 7 pm thru July. This should be the last week that we will share the field with the Fairfax Eagles as they are to pick up field #2 next week. However, turnout has been light so far (averaging 10-12) for the 'Burbs side of it negating a real need for more than half a field. The new jerseys are in. The personal orders are available for pick up. I am usually at Poplar Tree on Tues and Thurs."
I restored the photo gallery on the archive photos page to include 2003. I'm stopping there. 2003 was when I bought the Nikon DSL; the images before that were taken with a crappy 1.5 megapixel Kodak that had a very slow shutter speed, so all I could really take were lineouts, scrums and bar photos.
I may have to restore Iceman's 9/11 photos, however... those have a historic quality that really appeals to me.
Also, check out the four 4 Nov 2007 North Bay RFC photos I found buried in a subdirectory.
8 June 2009
Brigham here. I restored the photo gallery on the archive photos page to include 2005 and 2004. I also fixed some annoying nits. (For instance, I can't ftp files with "!" signs in them - how annoying. My software just ignores those files and doesn't tell me, and then I see gaps in the gallery page.) I'll reload 2003 and older as I get time, perhaps. No promises.
I saw M. Bardot at the U-19's Virginia Championships on Saturday. The West Loudoun Wolverines beat West End/SYC RFC for the U-19's Division I trophy at the T.C. Williams High School pitch in Alexandria. It was a close match - only three points difference. Good play on both sides. That trophy, by the way, was impressive - a huge eagle.
The Wolverines' web page is here; both boys' and girls' sides won birds - impressive! I see Lee Coogle - a Suburbs Old Boy - is the girls' coach.
5 June 2009
Brigham here. I restored some photo galleries on the archive photos page. Which ones? Down to 2006. Nothing earlier than that. I'm not sure how far back I'll reload... lots of work...
FYI - USA Rugby Championships:
Boy's High School: Jesuit
Nothing going with WSRFC this weekend. Handy lifestyle reminder: the next sevens tournament is NOVA 7's on 20 June. If you're interested talk it up at practice or contact Elvis.
4 June 2009
Poplar Tree field #1 is closed tonight. The backup is the Panzer Pitch. As always, use your discretionary powers of discretion. If by 7 PM water is pouring down as if from buckets and jagged lightning lights the sky perhaps it's wiser not to be out on an open field.
But then, rugby clubs don't go looking for the wise, do we? We look for guys who call it recreational to run around on a grassy field and slam into people.
3 June 2009
Nothing going on today that I'm aware of. It's Summertime, when the livin' is easy (in the words of Ira Gershwin).
The next sevens tournament I see on the horizon is NOVA 7's on 20 June. If you're interested talk it up at practice or contact Elvis. Elvis goes to everything and always has - he's all rugby, all the time and has been since 1998 when I first met him. Amazing dedication.
Let me look... yep, the html files look clean and the virus is gone. I think that's because I haven't done any ftps from my home PC, which still needs to have XP rebuilt. I'll fix the photos page this week during my copious free time. Warning: It won't go back to 1998. That's way too much work. And was anyone really looking at those anyway? It was kind of like being in a supermarket and seeing 153 varieties of Crest toothpaste. Sometimes you can have too many options.
By the way, if you come across any bad links or missing images on these pages, let me know and I'll fix them. I think I found them all but this is a big site.
2 June 2009
Practice tonight at Poplar Tree #1, 7 PM.
The virus is still gone. This week I'll fix the photos page, do some link checks, and hand it back over to Elvis.
Based on the survey returns I'll do one of those projections the networks do on election night and state that you want to see the profiles page remain. Okay, it remains.
1 June 2009
Beaker reports these results of "monk vaughn" 7s in richmond, May 30: lost to RICHMOND #1, 23-14; beat ROANOKE, 22-19; beat SEVERN RIVER #1, 27-22; beat RICHMOND #2, 29-0. WINNER OF "BOWL" BRACKET!
29 May 2009
The Monk Vaughn 7's are tomorrow. Who's going? Please e-mail Elvis ASAP if you want to go.
Hope you saw yesterday's practice cancellation message on the message board! If it looks like it's about to rain, it would behoove you (I have always wanted to use that word) to check here and the message board.
I fixed a whole lot more links; it's amazing how many cubbyholed connections this web site has. I think next week I'll tackle the photo pages.
28 May 2009
Brigham here. Touch rugby practice will be held tonight.
Another reason to go to practice: Bushy says the jerseys are in and he'll bring them tonight.
I restored a bunch of files and ran a link checker against some of the pages. The photos archives are still a mess... I'll deal with those last.
A new schedule for summer season is posted. Note that the first sevens tournament is coming up this weekend! If you are interested in doing this, please e-mail Elvis ASAP.
I also restructured our celebrated profiles page; it's no longer broken up into active players and current players. There are two good reasons for this: 1.) It's easier to maintain that way, and 2.) I don't know who the current players are. But it raises a question: Should we even have a Profiles Page? It was a lot of work to maintain, even when I was gung ho about rugby and spending nearly every waking hour on this club's activities and this webpage. And, in the past, it was used for mischief with some of our members. Frankly, I'm in favor of making it simply go away. However! Let the people speak. You may vote on it. See survey at left.
One thing I did get rid of is that annoying index page that comes up when you simply type "rugbyfootball.com" into your browser - you know, the WS glyph and "We will redirect you..." I never did like that thing. So Nineties. I got rid of it, once, but one of my webmaster successors restored it. Phooey. Now it simply redirects to the main page.
27 May 2009
Brigham here. Sorry! I thought I posted an update here but it appears I didn't. Last time I post anything without doing my usual quality assurance check. I hope nobody drove to Poplar Tree expecting practice would be held last night. The field was closed. BUT... you could have discovered that for yourself by calling the closure hotline number.
Given the all-around crappy weather forecast for this week we may be going through this routine again tomorrow...
The website is still virus free. I will restore some more directories later today.
26 May 2009
Brigham here. What's going on today? Rugby is going on today. Or maybe not, given that it's raining and the field may be closed. The Fairfax field hotline is 703-324-5264. I called at 9:45 AM and learned that they haven't updated their message from the 22nd. I'll call again later and post updates here... Remember, the backup is the Panzer Pitch.
I am pleased to announce that it appears that the website is still virus free.
22 May 2009
Brigham here. The site still looks good. I have started to carefully rebuild some directories in my copious spare time. Of course there's a bizillion old photos left to restore - as well as the links to them. That won't happen overnight. If it doesn't happen at all perhaps the only people who might get grumpy are the Old Boys who turn grumpiness into an art form. And perhaps of those, only O.D. might complain. But I feel the necessity of doing it anyway, such is my misplaced and conditional sense of completeness (which, sadly, doesn't seem to extend to workplace matters).
I'm not doing anything with the club nowadays other than to fix this blankety-blank website, so I have no idea what's going on. Hey club officers! If there's is anything you want to pass on, send it to me, okay?, so I have something to post here other than dreary news about uploading files nobody may ever read.
I know of no drink-ups, socials, impromptu touch rugby sessions or Old Boy match invitations going on this weekend. And all I see on the message board is a note about a lost dog in Burke. (Whew - slow news day, huh, Jeff?) Given that it's the Memorial Day weekend, I'm guessing that nothing is planned. So enjoy your weekend, by all means, but spare a thought or two for those who gave their lives for our way of life. The following quote from a fellow Jarhead seems apt: "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag." - Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC
21 May 2009
Brigham here. I just looked at the directories - everything still looks good. Maybe I whipped this virus after all. Once again, if your browser is warning you about infected files on rugbyfootball.com, please drop me a line. Next week, if we're still clean and I get my PC rebuilt I'll start restoring files.
I asked Elvis what club news I could pass on. He said there are two things: 1.) The club voted to move back into Division II competition, and, 2.) Sevens practice continues every Tuesday and Thursday (that's today) at Poplar Tree Park, Field #1 at 7 PM.
This is a grass field and subject to closure due to weather. The Fairfax field hotline is 703-324-5264. We do have Panzer Pitch as a fallback so PLEASE KEEP AN EYE HERE as you should anyway!

Brigham here. All is still well; I don't see any evidence of the javascript on this website. However, my restoration work is slowed by the fact that I'm dealing with a hard disk crashing problem at work. That is now claiming my immediate attention.
I don't have any club info. Once again, check the message board for new postings.
Once again, if your browser is warning you about infected files on rugbyfootball.com, please drop me a line.
19 May 2009
Brigham here. There aren't many .html files left; I'm sure there are all sorts of broken links. That way if there's another infection I can fix it quickly. I have the necessary stuff up, however. Now we're in what doctors call "watchful waiting" to see if the virus returns. If it does, that means I've got an infected machine or that I left javascript on the site somewhere.
I looked at the directories and all looks okay for now. Your browser shouldn't be warning you about any infected files on rugbyfootball.com. If it does, please tell me which files.
18 May 2009
Brigham here. Still battling the virus. I notice that a ton of .html files have been overwritten on Saturday; apparently the virus is still active on this site since I wasn't doing any ftps on Saturday. I am in the process of deleting thousands of files on the old photos pages as I simply do not have the time to go through every .html index page manually to clear the javascript entries. I know there are many, many .html files in these subdirectories with the javascript virus... apparently I will have to clear these first and start over. In other words, it looks like the work I did previously has been for naught.
So. You can get the latest club news by going to the message board. That is uninfected. In the meantime expect all sorts of dead links on the website until I get this fixed.
I hope there is a very warm place in hell reserved for the people who write virus code...
12 May 2009
Hi guys... Brigham here. I am taking over the website for a little while; I have coordinated this with Elvis, the usual webmaster. My guess is that you know this because some virus protection software is telling you, but it appears there's a nasty virus on rugbyfootball.com. I'm not sure how it got there, but I think I may have been the vector since I see the same thing on my wesclark.com files. The problem is with all the .html files... and there are hundreds. I have to go through them, some file by file, others in a more automated fashion from backups, and clear the offending javascript. This will take a while, I don't know how long.
In the meantime, stay off the old photos pages. Those will be the last I fix - and they may have to go entirely.
4 May 2009
Per Prez Bushy: "The rain forecast for all week plus what seems like poor interest leads to a need to postpone Alumni
day. Everyone is still encouraged to support the U-19's. Thanks-Bushy"
Some extremely sad news today from Brigham: "many of you know Travis Tull, who played with
Suburbs for a number of years. His wife RoShawn died unexpectedly on Friday night.
They have three small children. I am told that the funeral is at 10 AM this Wednesday, May 6th.
The location is the LDS (Mormon) Lake Ridge Ward building, 3718 Old Bridge Road,
Woodbridge, VA 22192."
27 April 2009
It looks like it is time to wrap up the spring season. Touch/7's sessions
starting tomorrow at Poplar Tree #1 at 7pm.
Also, we have discussed an Alumni day in conjunction with the the last home U-19 game at Lough field.
This would be Sat May 9 at 1 pm vs Nova. We can have a bring covered dish, BYOB format.
If there are enough attendees to play some rugby we can and if not we won't.
Per Prez Bushy: "We need to make a decision on the potential D2 move in the next 2 weeks. I have not
spoken to everyone but right now there seems to be enough sentiment for and against that a club meeting is in order."
Congratulations to Blacksburg RFC in their securing of the 2009 MARFU D3 Championship - here's how it went:

Even though there is no match scheduled for the upcoming weekend, it is highly important that everyone attends practices this week in preparation for next Saturday's (4/18) playoff match.
Tuesday & Thursday practice sessions are being held this week at "The Panzer Pitch" at 6:30 pm..

Directions to the "Panzer Pitch":
The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park
along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to
New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the
rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that
leads to the pitch, which is located under those high power lines.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is
a part of the whole practice experience.
9. This is an HOA field and we need to respect the community.
