It was a great tournament and the men of Western Suburbs had a great time in Savannah.
Western Suburbs Old Boys take 3rd in their division at the Savannah Rugby Tournament. Savannah RFC accidentally awarded the hardware to another team and were able to retrieve it after Bushy and Stax helped them see the error.

The coaching staff put together another great practice and the guys were put through their paces in a high energy practices where skills and fitness were emphasized. We were also fortunate to see several new faces joining the club, here they are. Please be sure to welcome them to the club when you see them. This is Garrett Johnson. He's new to rugby overall and excited to be part of the team. Veteran club member Jon Carter invited him out. This is John McAuliffe. He played rugby up in New Jersey and has played as Hooker. This is Xander Shaw. He's made it out to some of our coldest "unofficial" practices and is quick and agile. He played with GMU previously. This is Mason Baxter and if I recall correctly he played at ODU. This is Justin Dantonio. Justin is another newcomer to the sport of rugby and he's excited to be part of our brotherhood. This is Alex Alvarez. Peyton Davey says he's from West End. From what I was able to tell, he runs with intensity.
So after enjoying a few PBRs at Fat Tuesday's, we got to talking about new guys, not recognizing them, and how to better welcome them to our club. With our new and improved website, it is tons easier to post new content so we came up with this plan. From now on, we'll strive to let you know about our new members by sharing their name, photo, and rugby experience here after they've come to their first practice so stay tuned.
If you've got other ideas on how to make the new guys feel welcome, share it in the comments below. Wednesday's practice will be at 8 PM at the nZone. The coaching staff gave us a great run in last week so get there early, get stretched and be ready for what they've got planned for us this Wednesday.
Saturday's practice will be at Panzer Pitch at 10 AM (unless you are in Savannah). The word on the street is that they are going to start towing so park at the community center. Practice info is available here. Western Suburbs wants to see an amazing Boo Daddy 7s Harlotfest Tournament this year, so we've been proactive and invited clubs from Virginia, DC, Maryland and Pennsylvania to come enjoy the day with us. We've got more than 200 clubs invited, 70 of which are women's clubs. As we met Towson and Frederick WRFCs at the Serevi Rugby Camp in DC, we were able to invite them personally, but here's the alphabetical list of who you could see on August 1 at Morven Park:

Last year, we invited the Montreal Wanderers because, with a name like that, we figured they might surprise us and show up. They told us we'd given them too little notice, so that's what inspired this year's proactively invitations to clubs. The Wanderers have already written back letting us know they haven't written their summer schedule yet, so there's hope to see them too. If you don't see your club on the list, don't worry, you're still invited. Everyone (over 18) is invited to play in this tournament. If you are under 18, you are welcome to watch rugby, volunteer as a sideline judge or referee, or just people watch. Tomorrow's Practice (3/7) will be at PANZER PITCH 10:00am to 12:00pm. This will be an UNOFFICIAL practice, come at your own risk. That being said, we will enforce the no parking in the community behind Panzer Pitch.
Check out Our Practices for more information. This is one my favorite practice photos taken in February 2013 at Panzer Pitch. It is so hopeful for the season ahead and almost says, "Just add ruggers." Practices are an integral part of shaping a team. It is often the first time you get to meet and greet new players, work on your fitness and skills, and go out for after-practice shenanigans. Commit yourself to coming to every practice and you will find it pays you back by making you a better rugger, a better teammate, and improving your club.
Practice tonight will be a nZone, Field 2 in Chantilly at 8 pm. The address is 14550 Lee Road, Chantilly, Virginia. We had a great time at the Serevi Rugby Camp in DC yesterday and are looking forward to today.
The middle guy is from West Pot. He just wanted to be sociable. Also, West Potomac wants to play us in April. |
