The following is an overview of the 1992 season and suggestions for improvement in 1993. Keep in mind that this is my view of what I have seen and may not reflect the general club consensus.

The spring season arrived and with it brought a rookie coach with new ideas and big changes in mind. Though we had a little friction in the process, a few practices put us on the road to open up our game to a more aggressive style and more fun. The main thing we achieved was to open up our game and put more points on the board. Passing and ball handling, quick rucks and rolling off mauls, the kick and chase to utilize our speed and the attitude that each player needed to use their skills and " make something out of nothing " combined to bring Suburbs to a new level of play. With everyone "having a go with it" and using their basic skills to the best of their ability, Suburbs came back from an opening loss and surged into the St. Patrick's Day tournament. There they outscored their opponents 97 - 27 in four hard-fought matches. During the next three weeks Suburbs took the show on the road and posted one of the greatest wins of the spring season against a Roanoke side that refused to quit. Pressure defense and superb tackling by all brought us through a trying period with much success. With a combination of experienced veterans and young fresh talent, we finished up the season on a roll. I fully expected this to carry over to the fall season. Unfortunately, these expectations never came to fruition.

Fall ushered in the second half of the season and a very different WSRFC. The tough spring schedule left us with numerous injuries to start, and the first few weeks of practice produced even more. By mid season the number had grown and continuity was hard to keep. Suburbs had lost the fire and intensity that comes with healthy bodies and undying commitment to the open game. Falling back to basics and working in new players, we managed to fight through to finish a very frustrating end to our 1992 season. With attendance down at practice, as well as on game day, poor selections of the talent we had, and a loss of direction in coaching and motivation, Suburbs suffered what amounted to the fatal blow in our drive for a birth in the division championship.

WSRFC has a long way to go to get back on top of Division II. With more involvement from past and present players and the reorganization of the club as a whole, we stand a good chance of regaining the form that propelled us to great heights in the spring. The laws and the game have changed to benefit open play and we had a good head start on that last spring. Let's plan on getting back to it in 1993.
