Greg Gregory

Western Suburbs has a special award for members of the club who go well beyond the call of duty, and it is named the "Greg Gregory Award." It is not awarded every year like the other superlatives awards. There have only been six awards of it. In 1997 it went to Vinnie Panigot; in 2000 to Jeff Harpold, in 2001 to Wes Clark, in 2002 to John Cooper, in 2005 to Kelly Watkins and in 2007 to Jim Borell.

Jeff Harpold has this to say about Greg Gregory: "Greg would play one, two or three games on Saturday if he was needed. His goal was to stick around long enough to play with his sons. Unfortunately, he broke his back in an accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. Even though he couldn't play any more, he still loved the game and came out to help coach. No matter what the weather was like (rain, sleet, snow or cold ), Greg would be there in his wheelchair to travel to the games. We came up with the award a few years after he died and there really hasn't been that many people who would even qualify."

Vinnie Panigot had this to say about Greg: "There is an unyielding spirit in someone such as Greg Gregory who kept giving after his life changed dramatically."

Greg Gregory is also in the team photo taken when Western Suburbs won the Eastern Rugby Union's Division II championship in 1986.
